This year for your birthday, I was
inspired by my most memorable birthday - my mom's last one. She was losing her battle with recurrent
breast cancer, and all she really wanted was to spend time on the beach with
her two brothers who lived in different parts of the United States.
My grandfather wanted to give mom her
dream birthday, so he secretly flew her brothers into Fresno, CA where we lived
so they could surprise mom at the house, pick her up and drive her , and all of
her medical equipment, the 2 1/2hrs to Carmel where he lived for the
weekend. While driving to Carmel, you
have to drive by this awesome "rest stop"/tourist trap called Casa de
Fruita. It's the largest fruit stand,
wine tasting, coffee shop, camping in California - hence the fruit on the
chef's plate.
Once they arrived in Carmel, grandpa
vacated his house for them, totally stocked so they could have time together,
just the three of them. Mom said she
& her brothers just sat on the beach, talking, laughing & relaxing like
they never did growing up and that it meant so much to her to be able to do
that. When their weekend was over, her
brothers drove her back home, and then flew back home to their own families
after having given my mom the best birthday ever! Mom passed away several months later, but she
always talked about that weekend until the cancer took her memory away at the
end.
Thanks for stopping by today. Have a great day.
